Rapids, pools, long riffles and short runs. Native cutthroat trout. Crisp bright mornings that dissolve into warm, lingering afternoons. Wild birds rising into a brilliant sky. You could spend a lifetime exploring the storied woods and waters of Montana yourself, or let someone else share the highlights with you on a more reasonable time scale. That's where PRO Outfitters comes in. PRO has been guiding passionate anglers and bird hunters for over 40 years.
We will have Bryce Daviess from PRO Outfitters and North Fork Crossing Lodge sharing everything that North Fork Crossing Lodge and PRO Outfitters have to offer. Here are just a couple of the areas and activities in Montana he'll be touching upon.
Montana's Smith River Floats
If you've been following along for a while now, you probably saw that we drew a tag and had an opportunity to float the fabled Smith River in Montana last May. It's a sixty-one mile wilderness float with only one public access at the headwaters and one at the takeout. The Smith River starts in the mountains, flows through a thousand foot limestone canyon and spills out into the prairies. It's a float that should be on everyone's bucket list. If you don't have overnight rafting experience, don't have a boat, or want to lean on someone else's experience to get you down it, PRO can help.
Fly Fishing Day Trips on Montana's Revered Waters
There's so much classic fly fishing water in Montana that it's hard to know where to start. But PRO can certainly help. The Missouri River is never a bad choice. It is a big tailwater, known for its prolific hatches and 7,000-8,000 trout per mile. For dry fly enthusiasts, it is arguably the best dry fly fishery in the world.
The historic Blackfoot River boasts large populations of native West Slope Cutthroat trout. The Big Blackfoot meanders through one of the last truly undeveloped valleys in Montana. Plus, PRO’s North Fork Crossing sits on the bank of the North Fork of the Blackfoot River. It's the only full service fishing lodge in the famed Blackfoot Valley.
In addition to their bread-and-butter go-to rivers, PRO fishes the Bitterroot, Clark Fork, the North Fork of the Blackfoot and many lesser known rivers and streams throughout the west.
Upland Bird Hunting for All Wild Birds
The Sharptail Lodge was built right in the middle of 150,000 + acres of private farm and ranchland that is home to some of the most prolific wild bird habitat in the USA. The lack of development and vast tracts of native grass provides perfect habitat for our native sharptail grouse.

More about Bryce Davies
Bryce hails from the fly fishing epicenter of Bainbridge Island in the PNW. He was a veteran Colorado guide for years, showing clients the waters around Steamboat and Denver before heading north to Big Sky Country. When not helping people experience the trout producing waters of Montana, he can be found spending time with his small pack of bird dogs, usually on the hunt for Chukar and other species.
